Building the Tent Platform on Lopez

Memorial Day Weekend, 2004

Since our cabin only has two bedrooms, I’ve been thinking that we needed to carve out a space for a tent. Unfortunately, there really isn’t much flat ground that isn’t in the middle of the driveway, so we decided to build a tent platform.

Thankfully, Vance decided to come out for the day, because I’m not sure how mom, Shannon and I thought we were going to get this done without him. My father maybe could have directed us, but we would have taken about four times as long, and I’m not convinced it would be either square or level.

Here are Shannon & Vance inspecting the site, with the frame partially roughed-in.

Edgar
All day, Edgar kept an eye on the happenings, and stayed quite near us. Meanwhile, Haida was lurking in the bushes nearby, where she could hear everything, and Shrimpy stayed on the deck near the house, but could watch us.

Mom
Here's mom, pretending she actually worked on the thing.

Megan and Shannon, Hammering
Do Shannon and I look about five years old here? She had perfected an ambidextrous hammering technique. You can see that Edgar is picking up tips.

Two shots of Edgar, who thought it was pretty nice that we built him a nice platform for scouting the area and napping.
