| I made a decision to zoom directly across I-90 from Rochester to Seattle, in a long, hot, sort of boring three days. But I was feeling ready to be home, and since Shrimpy couldn't hike anywhere in Glacier, I decided to save it for another trip. | |

| This was the same route Amy-Lou and I took after junior year of college, and I took some of the same detours. How could I possibly skip the Corn Palace? Yep; it's decorated with corn. And every year the birds eat the displays, and every year they have a festival and redecorate with a new mural. | |

| I remember this "six ton prairiedog" and prairiedog village from our trip in 1990, as well. I think the giant prairiedog has actually been spruced up since then. These wonders are on the way to the Badlands. | |

| I probably should have lingered for an hour or two, to catch the good color of the setting sun, but it had been a long day, and I was ready to find a campsite. | |
| Here's where the good light went: Wall, S.D. I camped not two blocks from Wall Drug. I didn't want to go any further, since the annual motorcycle rally week was happening in Sturgis, and I figured there wouldn't be a campsite to be found in Western South Dakota. | |

| Devil's Tower really is odd. So odd that it seems like it should be in South Dakota, not Wyoming. | |

| My companions in the car: Dwight, Kuddles, and Shrimpy. Dwight is a road-trip veteran: he has been riding in the car since I got him during my post-graduation drive cross-country with Hiner, and went on my 5-week, 6,000 mile trip from Orlando to Seattle in 1996. (During which, may I note, both Jamie and Stephanie shouted, "Dwight!" when I walked in to their houses. "Oh, and you've brought Megan, too.") Kuddles has been with me since I was a baby, although he has updated eyes, nose, tongue, and stuffing. Shrimpy fits right in, don't you think? | |
